Prior to becoming an award-winning commercials director, Matt studied method acting at the Conservatory Theatre Ensemble in Mill Valley, California, and Professional Screenwriting for Film and Television at RMIT.
Matt’s body of work reveals a capacity for cinematic image-making, the ability to work closely with actors to elicit strong and nuanced performances, and the creative versatility to work comfortably within a range of styles and genres.
Recent commercial TVC directing assignments include a spot for Alfa Romeo via Cummins&Partners, and a series of brand launch spots for Federation University Australia via Publicis Worldwide — the centrepiece of a highly successful cross-platform launch campaign, which won the prestigious Henry Hoke Award at the 2014 DMA ECHO Awards in San Diego.
In 2014, Matt was one of three filmmakers awarded production funding from Screen NSW via its Emerging Filmmakers Fund for his short film, Flat Daddy, starring AFI and AACTA Award-winning actress, Kat Stewart (Offspring, Underbelly).
Flat Daddy had its world premiere in May 2015 at the Academy Award-accredited St Kilda Film Festival, where it was selected for opening night and received nominations for Best Director and Best Original Score.
The film was subsequently invited to screen in competition at the prestigious Palm Springs International ShortFest, Adelaide Film Festival, Flickerfest, and the HollyShorts Film Festival, and was one of four films to be nominated for Best Short Fiction Film at the 5th AACTA Awards.
Flat Daddy was also named a finalist in the 15th Screen Producers Australia Awards in the inaugural Short Film Production Award category, and was chosen to represent the city of Sydney at the UNESCO Cities of Film event at the Galway Film Centre in Ireland.
